Strategic Considerations

Round Selection

You Don't Need to Play Every Round

Strategic skipping when:

  • Unclear signals (PM ~55%, HM ~52%)

  • Unfamiliar AI combinations

  • Grudge dynamics you haven't tracked

  • GDP context uncertain

Optimal Participation: ~40-48 rounds (71-86% of tournament)

Timing Strategy

Early Tournament (Rounds 1-14):

  • Build position with high-confidence plays

  • Establish consistency streak

  • Learn grudge patterns forming

Mid Tournament (Rounds 15-42):

  • Exploit established grudge cycles

  • Capitalize on pattern recognition

  • Maintain consistency bonus

Late Tournament (Rounds 43-56):

  • Tournament position matters

  • Leading: Conservative plays to defend

  • Chasing: Aggressive contrarian bets

  • Mid-pack: Target specific high-confidence rounds

Risk Management

Conservative Strategy (Defend Lead):

  • Only bet when signals extremely clear

  • Follow Laglord momentum plays (most predictable)

  • Avoid contrarian threshold edge cases

  • Target 1.0x multiplier consensus plays

Aggressive Strategy (Climb Leaderboard):

  • Early timing multipliers (1.5x)

  • Contrarian threshold plays (Gates/Hodali)

  • Large divergence bets (Lei/Shipton)

  • Accept higher variance

Balanced Strategy (Optimal):

  • Mix of early (1.5x) and mid (1.3x) timing

  • Target clear AI triggers (85%, 80%, >20-point divergence)

  • Skip unclear rounds

  • Build consistency streaks

Tournament Phases

Phase 1: Pattern Discovery (Days 1-2)

What's Happening:

  • Players learning active AI personalities

  • Grudge formation begins

  • Economic baselines established

Strategy:

  • Conservative position building

  • Learn which AIs are active this tournament

  • Track early conflicts for grudge memory

Phase 2: Pattern Exploitation (Days 3-5)

What's Happening:

  • Grudge cycles active (5-round memory)

  • Consistent players pull ahead

  • Economic cascades from early rounds

Strategy:

  • Exploit established grudges

  • Use retaliation memory for predictions

  • Maximize consistency bonus

Phase 3: Tournament Positioning (Days 6-7)

What's Happening:

  • Leaderboard becomes clear

  • Leaders play defensively

  • Chasers take risks

Strategy:

  • Adjust risk based on position

  • Leading? Protect with safe plays

  • Chasing? Swing for contrarian wins

  • Mid-pack? High-confidence only
